The submissions closed for the 2020 Busan International Design Awards

  • A total of 1,237 works were received from 16 countries.

International Busan Design Award (IBDA), hosted by Design Council Busan, closed applications on the 16th amid enthusiastic responses from designers worldwide.

Busan Industrial Design Exhibition began in 1981, changed its name to International Busan Design Award, and played a significant role as an international design competition and commercialization platform since 2019. It is the largest international design competition in Asia, with a total prize of 50.4 million won.

This year's contest for the Busan International Design Awards received a total of 1,237 works in five categories (communication design, product design, environmental design, craft design and fashion design). In particular, more than 200 foreign works have been submitted from 16 countries, up to ten from last year, suggesting that the Busan International Design Awards is raising its status as an international design competition over the years.

The Awards openly recruited judges from domestic and foreign design experts through the website and selected 15 judges through the first online judges through a computer program to ensure fairness in the evaluation. DCB announced 190 works on the 26th through the three-day online evaluation.

The second round of offline physical applications will be available from November 4 to 10 to the Busan Design Awards Secretariat of DCB. After the second screening, it will be announced on November 16, and the award ceremony will be held at the event hall on the sixth floor of the Busan Design Promotion Agency from 4 p.m. on November 25.

The winning works will be registered with the Asia Design Platform (ADP) so that domestic and foreign companies can commercialize them, and will be displayed in the exhibition room on the first floor of the Busan Design Promotion Agency for three days from November 25.

Kim Sung-hyun, head of the Global Cooperation TF team said “The Busan International Design Awards, which is gaining global participation as the number of people around the world increases over the years, will establish its authority as Asia's largest design contest by allowing prize-winning works to be commercialized through the Asia Design Platform (ADP) as well as the venue for design festivals.”
